The Fathomwerx Makeover began with a simple introduction: Bryan and Eric from Matter Labs connected us with Alan Jagger and Greg DeVogel from NAVSEA. That introduction quickly revealed a powerful vision—and an opportunity to transform a forgotten Navy storage warehouse into a true hub for innovation.
Inside the old base warehouse, the first brainstorming meeting happened on folding chairs, temporary tables, two whiteboards, and a small TV screen. Nothing about the space looked modern or inspiring, yet it was the birthplace of big ideas. Alan and Greg saw what the space could become: a modern environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and rapid prototyping.
Their vision for Fathomwerx was clear—create a space where Navy personnel can openly discuss the millions of challenges they face across the fleet, where industry partners can bring solutions to the table, where expert speakers and engineers can collaborate, and where the next generation can learn and be inspired. Our job at Switch Studios was to design and execute a complete makeover aligned with the Fathomwerx brand and capable of supporting everything from brainstorming to prototyping.

We started by understanding how Fathomwerx would truly function. Alan and Greg explained that the space needed to support everything from battlefield problem-solving to logistics and engineering discussions. It also needed to host guest speakers, industry partners, and student groups.
To support all of this, we developed a comprehensive layout that defined clear zones:
After several layout iterations, we agreed to focus on the interior first, with exterior upgrades to follow later.
Once the layout was approved, Switch Studios created full 3D renderings. The existing warehouse had dusty yellow insulated walls—dated, loud, and distracting. We proposed painting them a deep charcoal grey to modernize the entire space and create a neutral backdrop.
Lighting, furniture color, graphics, and branded elements were used to define zones and bring the Fathomwerx identity to life. These renderings immediately resonated with leadership—they could finally see the future of the space.
Working within strict Navy base protocols, our team executed the installation cleanly and efficiently. Despite the challenges of the aging warehouse, the transformation was fast, organized, and precise. Every element was installed with the mission of Fathomwerx in mind.
To stay aligned with the government budget, we presented multiple estimate options and adjusted materials accordingly. We prepared a full material board including finishes, flooring, cabinetry samples, lighting concepts, and branded elements.
